Emmett Baird, the mill owner — and later prominent owner of our main house here at Magnolia Plantation — offered him well-engrained southern hospitality in his last hours. Lying on his death bed, he gave them a map to a treasure he buried years before on Fowlers Bluff, a few miles away, near the Suwannee River. Baird and his partner dug up the treasure and allegedly hid it somewhere around the main house on his estate.
I just got a call from a guest who has a standing reservation with me every month. He said he had to cancel this month because his boss thought staying at a B&B would look like he was pampering himself and they did not want the client that he was coming to see think that they were spending his money foolishly….Are you kiddig me, I asked? Nope, he was not kidding. He is now staying at a chain hotel for the same price as what he was staying with me for. Ok, business people, where is the common sense? You want to get things moving again, start helping the local business. The chains have corporate backing and will make it through this whatever you want to call it. I’m not finished with this one yet!

The Magnolia Plantation’s house, which is historically known as The Barid Mansion is turning 125 years old this year. Along with this milestone, Joe and Cindy, the owners will be celebrating their 20th year as innkeepers. Both of these anniversaries are unique. The house survived 30 years of parties and it truly is remarkable that it is still standing. Joe and Cindy have run their inn longer than any other innkeepers in the state of Florida and again, it is remarkable that they are still standing. When you have made it as long as the house and the innkeepers, you deserve a really big party. We will begin in May 2010 with a year long celebration. We hope you can join us at one of our monthly celebration parties. More information will be provided as we progress into the year.
